Our Success

When it comes to assisted pregnancy, the whole world looks to Genea. Here are some reasons why you might like to do the same.

Assisted pregnancy is one of the most emotional and significant journeys you will ever embark upon, so choosing a clinic is an important decision. IVF clinics are by no means all the same. In fact they differ greatly in their scientific ability, levels of care and success rates. And you will quite naturally want to be with the clinic that offers you the best possible outcome. To help you make your decision in the most empowered way, we’d like to share with you the following facts about Genea.

An emotional decision you can make scientifically

When making what is a very emotional decision, consider this scientific information. Over 600 clinics around the world, including most other clinics in Australia, culture embryos in a medium developed by Genea. Over 600 clinics around the world, including most other clinics in Australia, grow embryos in incubators invented by Genea. Over 600 clinics around the world, including most other clinics in Australia, transfer embryos using the catheter invented by Genea. The fact that Genea led the way in these vital areas is no accident. Of all IVF clinics in Australia Genea invests by far the most in research and development. In fact, of a total of nine current licences issued by the federal government for embryo research across Australia, including to universities and all other bodies, Genea holds eight.

Ongoing advances

Genea research has not only delivered huge advances in the past – such as when we virtually doubled IVF success rates in the mid-nineties – it delivers advances ongoingly. And all of the advances are focused on giving you, the Genea patient, a better journey and outcome today. Genea was the first clinic in Australia to introduce routine Day 5 embryo transfers. Growing the embryos a little longer before transferring them to the mother lets us  determine which embryos have the highest development potential and increases success rates. Day 3 to day 5 is a critical time because this is when an embryo switches genetic control from the mother’s genome to shared control between mother and father. This is a potential block point and transferring embryos beyond it is far more successful. We have given our patients world-leading success rates with this advancement for years, and other Australian clinics have only recently followed our lead.

Single embryo transfer

We were also the first clinic in Australia to introduce routine single embryo transfer. While many clinics transfer more than one embryo to try to improve their chances of success, our technology allows us to achieve higher success rates while transferring a single, carefully selected embryo. Before single embryo transfer, 25 to 30% of assisted conceptions were twins. This increases the chance of miscarriage, prematurity and birth defects. Again, other clinics are now following our lead. Genea was the first clinic ever to introduce preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) successfully for Day 5 embryos. In many cases PGD allows us to genetically test embryos prior to transfer to increase the chance of a normal pregnancy and healthy baby. We are the most successful PGD clinic in the world, offering testing for over 160 chromosome and genetic conditions with virtually twice the chance of a healthy baby for each embryo transferred.

The holy grail

To give you some idea of just how far ahead Genea is in assisted conception technology, consider this. An Australian IVF clinic recently stated that “the holy grail” for IVF technology right now would be the ability to test every one of the 23 chromosome pairs in the embryo before implantation. At Genea we have been doing just that since November last year. Quite simply, if you want to ensure that you benefit from the very latest assisted conception research and technology you could do no better than come to Genea.

Science is half the story

As superior as Genea clearly is in science, this is only half of the reason to consider us. The other half is care. Everything about Genea, from who we are to how we work, is about providing our patients with the best possible care as well as the best possible outcome. While other major clinics are owned by private equity, Genea is owned and run by scientists, doctors and staff, and has been since the clinic was founded 25 years ago. Our priority always has been and always will be the care and outcomes of our patients.

Keep your eyes open

One way better science meets better care in a better journey for our patients is in egg collection at Genea. At many other clinics egg collection is done under general anaesthetic. Patients are unconscious and may wake up with the number of eggs collected written on their hand.

At Genea you have the choice to be awake during egg collection. At this highly significant and special moment our patients can be holding hands with their partners and watching their eggs being collected on screen.

For most people, this is a deeply emotional and memorable moment.

Our doctors have been comfortable performing egg collections this way for 25 years. And for us, world-leading science is part and parcel of this world-leading care.

Individual care

Egg collection is just one of many examples of how Genea combines science and care into best practice. At very many clinics patients see whichever doctor or nurse is scheduled to be there at the time. This makes sense if you look at things from the point of view of managing a clinic.

At Genea, however, we look at things from the point of view of our patients and we understand what a moving and profound time this is for them.

So our patients have their own doctor and nurses throughout their treatment.

Barring emergencies or highly unforeseen circumstances, at Genea you will see the same nurse and have the same doctor throughout your treatment. You also have a support person and unlimited access to a counsellor throughout your treatment.

And you can call a nurse at any time, 24 hours a day. So if you wake up in the middle of the night with a little worry, big problem or a question, a fertility expert nurse is only a phone call away.

And incidentally, unlike other clinics Genea operates seven days a week. This allows us to time procedures for the best possible outcomes for our patients, instead of what might be the most convenient time for us.
