What is PCR?

In order to analyse genes or chromosomal regions involved in inherited disorders, large amounts of DNA are needed. The cells biopsied from the embryo do not contain enough DNA to analyse directly.

PCR is a technique used to amplify (or make many copies of) specific small segments of DNA in order to produce enough to be tested.

After amplification there are potentially millions of copies.
