Steven McArthur
Scientific Director - BSc, PLD (Harvard Business School)
Steven has been a key member of the Genea team for more than 22 years, holding various responsibilities for the fertility group’s laboratories and scientific functions. During this time he has been integral to Genea’s (formerly Sydney IVF) many fertility breakthroughs. Among other firsts, Steven introduced ICSI services into Sydney IVF regional laboratories in May 1998. In 1999 he developed the trophectoderm biopsy technique, resulting in the world’s first live born child following blastocyst biopsy.
Steven’s management and laboratory skills have been applied extensively across the globe and he has consulted in various countries including China, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, New Zealand and Japan.
Steven has been Genea’s Scientific Director since April 2009.

Sarah Harper
Clinical Services Consultant – RN, MSc in Medicine
Sarah joined Genea in 2001 and is currently our Nurse Educator. Sarah started her career as a Registered Nurse and Midwife, where she gained more than ten years’ experience in women’s health before moving into fertility nursing in 1997. Sarah has worked at a number of fertility clinics in England and around Australia.
Sarah has held many roles and responsibilities at Genea within the nursing team. She’s been a senior nurse responsible for patients having Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis and a Clinical Nurse Specialist, providing expert advice relating to the speciality of Assisted Reproductive Technology nursing.
Sarah completed a Master of Science in Medicine in 2010 (RHHG) at The University of Sydney. Sarah is currently responsible for developing and implementing fertility nurse education programs for more than 100 Genea nurses. Sarah is passionate about professional development of nurses in the dynamic and rapidly advancing field of Assisted Reproductive Technology.
As Clinical Services Consultant with more than 20 years’ experience in the industry, Sarah brings a wealth of knowledge and clinical skills to the Genea Consult team.
Paul Harrison
Laboratory Services Consultant - BBiomedSc
Paul began his career at Genea (formerly Sydney IVF) 11 years ago and has been involved in culture media through to clinical laboratory management.
In 2007, Paul assisted in the establishment of a full IVF clinic with the PLA Navy General Hospital in Beijing, China. During this process, Paul and the team were able to implement China’s first elective single embryo transfer program in combination with blastocyst vitrification.
Since 2009, Paul has had management responsibility for the central Genea Embryology Laboratory in Sydney. During this time more than 15,000 IVF/ICSI cycles (inclusive of over 2,000 PGD cycles) and over 8,000 frozen embryo transfer cycles have been undertaken under Paul’s management. These roles have resulted in Paul accumulating extensive experience in all facets of IVF laboratory operations.
In 2014, Paul was a key team member in establishing Genea’s joint venture clinic at Oxford Women’s Health in Christchurch, New Zealand. As Clinical Services Consultant for Genea Consult, Paul offers a decade of experience running Australia’s leading Embrology lab as well as experience in the unique challenges of greenfields clinic establishment.
Dr Robert Woolcott
MBBS (Hons), AMP (Harvard), FRANZCOG, CREI
Robert is joint Chairman of the Board of Directors of Genea Limited. He joined the Genea Board as a Non-Executive Director in 2011 and was elected joint Chairman in 2019. He is a member of the Audit Committee, the Risk and Compliance Committee and the Remuneration and Nominations Committee. He chairs of the Medical Practice Committee.
He is Medical and Management Director of Genea Newcastle and a pathology provider for the Genea group. Robert graduated as a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with honours in 1981 and has 33 years of experience in IVF and reproductive microsurgery. He undertook the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 2007. He is a former member of the RANZCOG Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility subspecialist sub-committee, the Hunter Post Graduate Medical Institute Board and the Mayne Health Medical Advisory Board.
