If you would like to have semen (sperm) analysis undertaken at Genea Andrology, you will need a referral for testing from your GP or Genea Fertility Specialist. They will provide you with a request form listing the tests required.
An appointment is required for all visits, because at Genea Andrology we make sure a scientist is in the lab ready to analyse your sample within an hour of ejaculation.
We can generally schedule an appointment within a week. Make an appointment online or click onto the tab on the right to make an booking.
When you ring to make an appointment, we will request the following information:
At the time we’ll give you all the specific information you need about when to abstain, the cost of the test and where to visit for your appointment.
In general, before you have your testing at Genea Andrology we ask that you abstain from ejaculation for three days, unless your doctor has specified otherwise. We’ll give specific instructions for your test but you should be aware that increasing the period of abstinence you’ve been asked to stick to does not improve your results.
Try not to sit in hot tubs or spas during the three months before the testing and drug use, alcohol intake and cigarette smoking should be kept to an absolute minimum during the same time frame.
If you have or have had a fever within three months before the testing, sperm quality may be adversely affected. Please mention this to your doctor prior to testing.
Our facilities are comfortable and very private, giving you peace of mind during what we understand can be a confronting or embarrassing process. Our high scientist to sample ratio means each sample is assessed individually and quickly. Did you know that your sperm cells start to deteriorate and die off within 60 minutes so our personalised, on the spot service helps ensure your results are comprehensive and accurate.
All scientists analysing the samples at Genea Andrology have a degree in biological science and have undergone an extensive training period. Furthermore, our scientists take part in an annual internal quality assurance scheme and quarterly external quality assurance schemes.
You can be assured that once your sample has been analysed by one of our scientists it is destroyed as contaminated biological waste by incineration.
After thorough analysis by a scientist dedicated to your sample, your test results will generally be released within five days to your doctor. Your doctor will then interpret your results for you with reference to your (and your partner's, if appropriate) medical history.
In cases of an abnormal result repeat testing is recommended.
At Genea Andrology we understand that waiting for the results of your test may be an anxious time. Please talk to your doctor or directly with our staff at Genea Andrology to discuss options such as performing tests urgently where possible and necessary, or the rapid release of provisional results verbally to your doctor when required.
