Biography

Dr Cheryl Phua takes care to create a friendly and open environment during consultations with patients to help them feel at ease and reassured. Cheryl assesses the circumstances of each patient in order to tailor a personalised approach and treatment recommendations. At every point in the original assessment and during treatment, Cheryl supports her patients with clear information about their fertility and gynaecological situation to enable them to be truly involved in the decision making process. Cheryl’s strong focus on patient care is combined with a dedication to research and learning in the fields of medicine and science.
 

Experience & Qualifications

After completing school in Singapore, Cheryl moved to the United States to study at the prestigious Ivy League college University of Pennsylvania. Between 1999 and 2004, Cheryl completed a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and a Master of Biotechnology. During her time at the University of Pennsylvania, Cheryl was a recipient of the Baxter Allegiance Foundation Scholarship and also a Deans List recipient.
 
In early 2005, Cheryl moved to Sydney to study a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Sydney where she received the Dame Constance d’Arcy Memorial Prize in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and graduated with honours. She was awarded a Master of Reproductive Medicine from the University of New South Wales in 2015 and became a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2018.
 
In addition to these qualifications, Cheryl underwent further training in the subspecialty of fertility and reproductive endocrinology. Following her completion of subspecialty training in infertility and reproductive endocrinology (CREI), including female and male factor infertility, reproductive endocrinology, adolescent gynaecology, andrology and menopause management; she continues to remain active in research, in particular in the fertility preservation setting as well as ultrasound as a tool for the diagnosis of deep infiltrating endometriosis.

Cheryl is currently a Visiting Medical Officer at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Mater Hospital and North Shore Private Hospital.
 
Cheryl joined Genea as a Fertility Specialist in early 2019.

Throughout her career, Cheryl has been keen to pass on her skills and experience to younger doctors. She has fulfilled a number of teaching roles through RANZCOG and the University of Sydney where she still currently teaches medical students.
 
Cheryl also has two ongoing research projects, a retrospective review of oncofertility at a single tertiary referral unit and ultrasound diagnosis of deep infiltrating endometriosis and its surgical correlation.
