19 Sep 24: Everything to Know About Egg Freezing: Full Guide

Overview
Egg freezing is one of the most talked about topics in fertility today, and for good reason. As more women navigate the balance between career, relationships, and family planning, understanding the process, the costs, and the right timing has never been more important.

Genea Melbourne City fertility specialist Dr Genia Rozen answers the questions she hears most often from patients considering their options.

The cost of egg freezing in Australia typically ranges per cycle, covering monitoring, egg retrieval, day surgery, anaesthetist fees, and the initial freeze. Medications and ongoing storage costs are generally additional. There is currently no Medicare subsidy for elective egg freezing, though Genea has partnered with HUMM to offer interest free payment plans, making fertility preservation more accessible for women who may not otherwise be able to afford it.

When it comes to timing, Dr Rozen describes the early to mid 30s as the sweet spot. Freezing too early means a higher likelihood the eggs will never be needed, while waiting until the early to mid 40s can significantly reduce egg quality. To achieve an 80 per cent chance of a baby from frozen eggs, women under 35 would need approximately 15 mature eggs, while at 38 that number rises to around 30, often requiring multiple cycles.

The process itself involves around two weeks of hormonal injections and careful monitoring via ultrasounds and blood tests, followed by a minor surgical procedure under sedation to retrieve the eggs. Most women are able to continue with work and daily activities throughout.

Emotionally, the journey can bring a mix of hope and anxiety. Dr Rozen encourages patients to lean on their support networks throughout the process.
