10 May 24: Fertility Diaries: Two Women Share Their Journey

OverviewSpecialist overview
Dr Genia Rozen, a fertility specialist at Genea, was featured in Marie Claire sharing two powerful patient stories that highlight the challenging paths to motherhood for women with endometriosis and PCOS.

The article addresses how fertility issues affect 1 in 6 Australian couples, yet remain shrouded in stigma. Genia emphasises the critical importance of early diagnosis and treatment: "It can be heartbreaking to watch patients who have gone for many years without a diagnosis and by the time I see them, they're racing against the clock to get pregnant."

The piece follows Letitia Comello's journey with undiagnosed endometriosis. Despite experiencing painful periods since age 14, Letitia was repeatedly dismissed by multiple healthcare providers who told her to "just get on with it." After a devastating miscarriage in 2021 and eight months of unsuccessful conception attempts, she finally received a diagnosis through Genia. A HyCoSy scan revealed endometriosis, and a laparoscopy in June 2023 identified severe deep infiltrating endometriosis across multiple areas. Following treatment, Letitia and her husband Travis successfully conceived, expecting their baby in May 2024.

The article also shares Shannyn Werner's experience with PCOS. After going eight months without a period at age 19, she was dismissed by her GP. Years later, when trying to conceive with her husband Carl, she finally received proper testing and diagnosis through Genia. After eight months of Letrozole treatment and careful monitoring, Shannyn successfully conceived and welcomed baby Renn in February 2024.

Both women emphasise the importance of advocacy and early medical intervention. "Women are taught in school that it's easy to fall pregnant from young but this isn't always the case," Letitia notes. Shannyn adds, "I wish I had pushed harder with the medical professionals to help diagnose my PCOS."

Genia's patient-centred approach, focusing on education and various treatment pathways, demonstrates Genea's commitment to supporting women through their fertility journeys with compassion and comprehensive care.
