11 February 2025: Why egg freezing has jumped 1567 per cent in 10 years in Australia | The Daily Telegraph

OverviewSpecialist overview
Egg freezing has moved from a niche medical procedure to a mainstream fertility option, and the numbers reflect just how significantly attitudes have shifted. At Genea, the number of women choosing to freeze their eggs has grown by 1,567 per cent over the past decade, a remarkable figure that speaks to both increased awareness and advances in the technology that makes the process possible.

At the heart of this growth is vitrification, a fast-freeze technique that has transformed the way eggs are preserved. Unlike older slow-freeze methods, vitrification dramatically reduces the risk of ice crystal formation, giving eggs a far better chance of surviving the thaw when a woman is ready to use them. It is not a guarantee of pregnancy, but it does mean that the eggs collected today are being preserved in the best possible conditions current science allows.

For women considering egg freezing, timing is one of the most important factors to understand. Genea Fertility Specialist Dr Chandrika Parmar explains that egg quality and quantity both decline with age, which means that freezing eggs earlier generally offers better outcomes. Women in their late 20s and early 30s typically produce more eggs per cycle and those eggs are more likely to be chromosomally normal.

The number of eggs collected in a single cycle varies from person to person and depends on factors including age and ovarian reserve. Most women will undergo hormone stimulation injections over approximately ten to fourteen days before the eggs are retrieved under a light anaesthetic in a short procedure.

For women who are not yet ready to start a family but want to preserve their options, egg freezing offers a meaningful way to take some control over their reproductive future. Dr Parmar's advice is consistent: the earlier the conversation happens, the more options are available.
