15 May 2025: IVF in Australia: Why a trusted, transparent system deserves public confidence

Overview
When media reports surface about rare incidents in IVF clinics, it is natural for patients to feel concerned. But context is important. Australia's fertility care system is among the safest, most transparent, and tightly regulated in the world, and understanding how that system works can help restore confidence.

In this opinion piece for Women's Health, Petra Wale outlines the foundations of Australia's IVF regulatory framework and why it deserves public trust. Long before fertility treatment was legally regulated, clinicians and scientists took it upon themselves to set high standards. The Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee (RTAC) was established in 1986 as a profession-led initiative, and by 2002 accreditation became a legal requirement for any clinic working with human embryos. Today, clinics undergo independent annual audits covering everything from laboratory processes to consent protocols, and must demonstrate continuous improvement year after year.

The piece also addresses recent media coverage of audit results, clarifying that audits are designed to proactively identify and prevent risks, not to capture errors that have already occurred. Australia's IVF multiple birth rate sits at just 2.8%, one of the lowest globally, reflecting the strength of data-driven oversight through the national ANZARD outcomes database.

Looking ahead, the Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) is calling for a nationally consistent regulatory framework to address the current patchwork of state and territory laws, along with an independent statutory RTAC and a national donor registry. These reforms would strengthen accountability, improve equity of access, and further build public confidence in fertility care across the country.

Transparency, accountability, and a culture of open disclosure are what set Australia's fertility sector apart. Read the full article to understand what those standards mean for your care.
