03 October 2025: Insights from the IVF Industry Review
The federal review of Australia’s IVF industry outlines changes to regulation, accreditation, and patient transparency.
Following recent reports of embryo and sperm mix-ups, the federal government reviewed how Australia’s fertility industry is regulated. The review recommends transferring clinic accreditation to the independent Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, introducing national standards, and improving transparency around costs and complaints.
Genea Melbourne City Medical Director A/Prof Alex Polyakov, who co-authored an article on the findings in The Conversation, said that while such incidents are extremely rare, they highlight vulnerabilities even in systems with strong safeguards. He called for ongoing vigilance and continued strengthening of safety measures across the sector.
