4 November 2024: Innovations in reproductive medicine, Gartner hype cycle and Dunning–Kruger effect | ScienceDirect

OverviewSpecialist profiles
New technologies in reproductive medicine are not always what they first appear to be. A peer-reviewed paper co-authored by Genea's Associate Professor Alex Polyakov and Dr Genia Rozen, published in Reproductive BioMedicine Online, examines why promising innovations in IVF so often fail to deliver on their early promise and what the sector can do about it.

The paper draws on two well-established frameworks. The Gartner Hype Cycle describes the pattern by which new technologies generate rapid enthusiasm, fail to meet inflated expectations, and are eventually abandoned or scaled back. The Dunning-Kruger effect describes the tendency for individuals to overestimate their own competence and knowledge. The authors argue, in a first for any field, that one is a direct consequence of the other: overconfidence in early-stage evidence drives the hype cycle in reproductive medicine, ultimately causing harm to patients.

The endometrial scratch is used as a case study. Once widely adopted as a way to improve IVF outcomes, it was embraced before adequate evidence existed to support its use, and subsequent robust research failed to confirm its benefit.

The authors call for a more rigorous approach to designating interventions as innovative, one that triggers concrete steps for data collection rather than serving as a tokenistic label. They propose the development of comprehensive national and international databases, freely accessible to researchers, to allow for faster and more reliable assessment of new treatments as they emerge.

The paper is not an argument against innovation. It is an argument for protecting patients and clinicians from the cost, harm, and lost time that comes with adopting unproven methods too soon.
