The IVF treatment process (Step by step guide)
Understanding the IVF treatment process can help alleviate some of the stress and uncertainty patients may feel. Here’s a step-by-step guide to what you can expect:
1. Ovulation stimulation & monitoring
The process begins with hormone therapy to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, rather than the single egg that typically develops each month. Patients self-administer daily injections of fertility medications under careful guidance.
Throughout this phase, your fertility specialist will closely monitor your hormone levels and follicle development using blood tests and ultrasounds. Once the follicles are deemed ready, a trigger injection of hCG is administered to prepare the eggs for collection.
2. Egg retrieval
Roughly 36 hours after the trigger shot, the egg retrieval procedure takes place. Under light sedation, a fertility specialist uses ultrasound guidance to extract mature eggs from the ovaries using a thin needle. This outpatient procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes.
3. Fertilisation in the laboratory
On the same day as egg retrieval, the collected eggs are combined with partner or donor sperm in a laboratory setting. Fertilisation may occur naturally or through a technique called Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg, especially useful in cases of male infertility.
The fertilised eggs, now embryos, are cultured and observed for several days as they develop.
4. Embryo culture & transfer
After 3 to 5 days of development, the healthiest embryo(s) are selected for transfer. The embryo transfer is a simple, non-surgical procedure where a thin catheter is used to place the embryo into the uterus. It is generally painless and does not require anaesthesia.
Any remaining high-quality embryos may be frozen for future use through cryopreservation.
5. Pregnancy test & follow-up care
Approximately 10 to 14 days after the embryo transfer, a blood test will determine whether implantation has occurred and pregnancy has been achieved. If the test is positive, early pregnancy care begins with additional hormone support and monitoring.
At Genea Fertility, we offer continued care and support throughout the entire IVF process, helping our patients feel informed, empowered, and supported.
Timeline of IVF treatment: What to expect during the IVF process
The timeline of IVF treatment typically spans two weeks, although this can vary slightly depending on individual circumstances. Here’s a general timeline to help you understand what to expect:
- Initial Consultation & Testing (Week 1–2): This phase involves comprehensive fertility assessments, hormone testing, and ultrasounds.
- Ovarian Stimulation (Week 3): Hormone injections begin and continue for approximately 10–14 days.
- Egg Retrieval & Fertilisation (Week 4): Eggs are collected and fertilised in the lab.
- Embryo Transfer (Week 4–5): Embryos are transferred 5 days after egg collection.
- Pregnancy Test (Week 5–6): A blood test confirms whether the procedure has been successful.
