6 October 2022: Brittany Hockley reveals why she froze her eggs with Genea | Mamamia

Overview
For Brittany Hockley, the decision to freeze her eggs wasn't born out of a health scare or a doctor's urgent recommendation, it came from a place of self-awareness and a desire to protect her future choices. At 33, single and focused on her career, Brittany knew she wasn't in a position to have a child yet, but she also knew she didn't want her biological clock to make that decision for her.

As she put it herself: "I wanted my future self to be empowered and have the option to create the life she wanted on her own timeline – not the one prescribed by society."

After extensive research, Brittany chose Genea to guide her through the process. Walking into that first consultation, she felt relatively at ease. She had lived a healthy lifestyle her entire life, exercising daily, never smoking, eating well, so she wasn't anticipating any major concerns. What she heard, however, stopped her in her tracks.

She was informed that, based on her test results and age, her chances of falling pregnant naturally sat at around 15 to 20 per cent. It was a confronting moment, and one that sent Brittany home in tears. Looking back, she reflects that much of that devastation came down to perception, hearing "only 15 per cent" rather than "you do have a chance." It's a distinction that matters enormously, and one that many women navigating fertility challenges will understand deeply.

After four months of preparation, Brittany began the stimulation phase of her egg freezing cycle. For approximately two weeks, she administered daily hormone injections at the same time each day, a process she describes as far more demanding than she had anticipated. The physical effects, particularly in the second week, were significant, with bloating, emotional surges, and the all-consuming nature of syncing her life to her cycle.

Her experience is a candid and relatable reminder that egg freezing is both a deeply personal decision and a physically involved process, and that taking control of your fertility future, while challenging, is a powerful act of self-advocacy.
