FAQs
A bulk-billed fertility assessment at Genea is a comprehensive consultation with a specialised Fertility GP that comes at no out-of-pocket cost to you. The entire consultation fee is covered by Medicare, meaning you won't pay anything for this initial assessment. During this appointment, you'll discuss your fertility journey, medical history, and receive tailored advice about your conception options. The assessment helps determine what tests may be needed and whether you can continue trying naturally or if you need further assistance.
You should consider booking a bulk-billed fertility assessment if you're under 35 and have been trying to conceive for 12 months, or if you're over 35 and have been trying for 6 months.
However, you're welcome to book an appointment at any time if you have concerns about your fertility, especially if you have known medical conditions that might impact conception such as PCOS, endometriosis, irregular periods, or previous pregnancy complications.
The service is bulk billed for all Medicare card holders across ACT, NSW, QLD, SA, VIC, and WA. Please note that you will need to reside in Australia at the time of appointment to get Medicare benefit.
During your fertility assessment, the Fertility GP will conduct a thorough review of both partners' medical histories, discuss how long you've been trying to conceive, review your general and reproductive health, and assess lifestyle factors that may impact fertility. They'll explain what initial fertility tests may be appropriate, such as blood tests to check hormone levels, semen analysis, or ultrasound scans. The GP can write referrals to Fertility Specialists if needed and may prescribe ovulation tracking medications. The consultation typically takes 30 - 45 minutes.
A Fertility GP is a General Practitioner with additional training and expertise in reproductive medicine who conducts initial fertility assessments, orders basic fertility tests, and provides first-line fertility guidance. They can prescribe ovulation tracking and refer you to specialists when needed.
A Fertility Specialist (or Reproductive Endocrinologist) is a doctor who has completed specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology plus additional subspecialty training in reproductive medicine. They coordinate complex treatment plans including IVF, IUI, and surgical interventions.
Starting with a Fertility GP is often the most accessible and cost-effective first step.
No, seeing a Fertility GP doesn't mean you'll be prescribed IVF. Many couples who attend a fertility assessment discover they can continue trying to conceive naturally with some lifestyle modifications or simple interventions. The assessment helps identify if there are any obvious factors affecting fertility that can be addressed without assisted reproductive technology. IVF is only recommended when simpler options aren't suitable or haven't been successful. Your Fertility GP will discuss all available options based on your specific circumstances.
Common tests that may be recommended include: blood tests to check hormone levels (AMH, FSH, LH, oestrogen, progesterone), thyroid function tests, ovulation tracking through blood tests or ultrasounds, pelvic ultrasound to assess ovaries and uterus, semen analysis for male partners to check sperm count and quality, and potentially HSG (hysterosalpingogram) to check if fallopian tubes are clear.
The specific tests recommended will depend on your individual circumstances, age, and how long you've been trying to conceive.
You can book directly through Genea's website by selecting your state location. Bulk-billed assessments are available in ACT, NSW, QLD, SA, and VIC through the general booking link, with a separate booking system for WA. You don't need a referral from your regular GP to book.
Appointments are available at Genea clinics with Fertility GPs including Dr Helen Demetriou, Dr Ali Hodgkinson, and Dr Cathy Ngo in Sydney, and Dr Kirri Falconer and Dr Bernadette Bailey in Perth. Please note that you will need to reside in Australia at the time of appointment.
Yes, it's strongly recommended that both partners attend the fertility assessment together. Fertility challenges can stem from either partner or a combination of factors, with male factor infertility contributing to approximately 40% of cases.
Having both partners present allows the Fertility GP to take a complete medical history, discuss lifestyle factors that might affect both partners' fertility, and ensure everyone understands the recommended next steps. If your partner cannot attend, try to bring their medical history information with you.
Bring your Medicare card, any previous fertility test results or medical records, a list of current medications and supplements, your menstrual cycle tracking information (dates, cycle length, any irregularities), details of how long you've been trying to conceive and methods used, and any relevant medical history including previous pregnancies, surgeries, or chronic conditions. If you've been using ovulation prediction kits or fertility apps, bring this data along as well.
