When to seek help
We're here to accompany you throughout your journey. When you decide to begin, we'll guide and support you in taking the next best steps.
Overview
The standard advice for when to get reproductive assistance is if you’re under 35 and you’ve been trying for 12 months or more without success, or if you’re over 35 and have been trying for six months without success.
This is a good general guideline but, in fact, the best time to seek help is when you become worried about not conceiving.
Don’t hold back on getting support or feeling frustrated because the correct amount of time has not passed. If you’re feeling concerned or have any questions, please feel free to contact our Fertility Concierge for support and we’ll help you explore your options and make a plan.

- Irregular periods
- PCOS
- Endometriosis
- Tubal issues
- Recurrent miscarriage
- Premature menopause
- Genetic concerns
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Fibroids
- Or adenomyosis
For men, it is important to speak to a Fertility Specialist if you have:
- Low sperm count
- Poor sperm shape or movement
- Anti-sperm antibodies
- Ejaculatory or erectile concerns
- Absence of sperm
- Genetic concerns
- Or complications from a prior vasectomy

FAQs
If you’re under 35, we recommend you seek help after 12 months of regular unprotected sex. If you’re over 35, we suggest you see a fertility specialist after six months of trying to conceive. Or if you have any fertility related conditions such as irregular periods or endometriosis, you should see a fertility speciality immediately.
During your first consultation, your fertility specialist will gather a comprehensive medical history, focusing on menstrual details, timing of intercourse, sexual concerns, and past pregnancy history, along with results from prior fertility tests.
To book a Fertility Specialist consultation, you must obtain a referral from your GP. Request the referral to be addressed to Genea Fertility and/or your fertility specialist, ensuring inclusion of both your and your partner's names, if applicable.
