Why do you specialise in male fertility?

Male fertility (https://www.genea.com.au/pages/male-fertility-MCD76OLJES45F3ZDJE66DCZZESV4) is an increasingly recognised and important area of reproductive medicine. Historically, much of the focus in fertility care has been placed on female reproductive health, while factors affecting male fertility have sometimes received less attention. In reality, male factors contribute to fertility difficulties in around half of couples experiencing challenges with conception. I believe it is important that both partners are assessed as part of the same fertility journey, rather than looking at one person in isolation. A thorough assessment of both partners from the outset can help identify contributing factors sooner, avoid unnecessary delays, and ensure that my patients receive the most appropriate treatment at the right time.

What does your CREI qualification mean for me as a patient?

CREI (https://ranzcog.edu.au/training/subspecialty/crei/) (certification in reproductive endocrinology and infertility) is Australia's highest subspecialty qualification in fertility medicine. In practical terms, it means you're in the hands of a specialist trained to handle challenging cases which may not have responded to the usual treatments. It also means that you are getting a personalised approach to your care, rather than a ‘one size fits all’ protocol.

Do you offer fertility preservation?

Whether you are thinking ahead about your future family, or facing medical circumstances that may affect your fertility, we can discuss your options and put a plan in place that helps to provide you with reproductive choices in the future.

How does your training in genomics benefit your patients?

I have completed a Graduate Diploma of Medicine in Genomics and Precision Medicine, an area that is increasingly relevant to fertility care. It deepens my understanding of the genetic factors (https://www.genea.com.au/pages/genetic-carrier-screening-MCQCJMWFPN2VDMPHPS73VJCPXW6A) that can influence fertility and reproductive health, and helps me guide patients through conversations about genetic testing and what results might mean for their journey.

Helping individuals and couples across the Hunter and Mid-North Coast navigate their fertility journey, Dr Kate Burston is a CREI-qualified Fertility Specialist who brings her passion for reproductive medicine and extensive training to Genea Newcastle.

Dr Burston has a particular interest in male fertility, an area of fertility medicine that is too often under-explored, alongside comprehensive expertise in female fertility, fertility preservation, reproductive surgery, endocrinology and andrology, and recurrent pregnancy loss.

Experience and qualifications

Dr Burston holds the Certification in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (CREI), Australia's highest subspecialty qualification in fertility medicine, achieved following subspecialty training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Through this advanced training, she developed comprehensive expertise in male and female infertility, fertility preservation, reproductive surgery, endocrinology and andrology, and recurrent pregnancy loss.

She completed her Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Newcastle in 2011, excelling through the International Leadership Experience and Development Program, and went on to complete a Master of Reproductive Medicine with Excellence at the University of New South Wales in 2021. She was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2023, and has also completed a Graduate Diploma of Medicine in Genomics and Precision Medicine.

Dr Burston is an active member of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology ESHRE, the Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ), and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). She is a Conjoint Lecturer at the University of Newcastle and a Staff Specialist at John Hunter Hospital, reflecting her commitment to both patient care and medical education.
