01 May 2026: Male infertility is more common than you think: why it’s worth getting tested | Women's Agenda

OverviewSpecialist overview
Fertility challenges for men are more common than many people realise. When couples start trying for a family, the assumption is often that if something is not working, the issue lies with the woman. But the reality is far more balanced and often misunderstood.

Male infertility is a significant factor in around half of all couples experiencing difficulty conceiving. Yet despite how common male fertility challenges are, stigma and silence still prevent many men from seeking answers or considering fertility testing early.

For sports broadcaster Sam Hargreaves, the moment he learned he had zero sperm came as a shock. The diagnosis did not just impact his fertility journey, it challenged his sense of identity. “I just remember it hitting me like a tonne of bricks,” he said, describing the emotional weight that followed .

Like many men, Sam initially associated fertility with masculinity, a connection that can make a male fertility challenge particularly confronting. Genea Fertility Specialist Dr Chandrika Parmar says this reaction is common, with many men feeling they have somehow “failed” when faced with low sperm count or other fertility challenges .

But the truth is that male fertility challenges are a medical condition, not a reflection of someone’s worth or identity.

The encouraging news is that there are more options than ever before. From lifestyle changes to advanced reproductive technologies, many causes of male fertility challenges can be treated or managed. Even in complex cases, techniques like ICSI, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, allow specialists to use a single viable sperm to fertilise an egg, opening up new possibilities for parenthood .

Just as importantly, early fertility testing can make a significant difference. A simple fertility test for men can help identify potential issues sooner, allowing couples to make informed decisions and avoid months or even years of uncertainty.

Sam’s journey, which ultimately led to the birth of two children, highlights the importance of seeking support, both medical and emotional. Through counselling, open communication, and expert care, he and his partner were able to navigate the challenges together.

Male fertility is an important part of the conversation, and early testing can help you better understand your options.
