13 Dec 23: Australia Marks 20yrs of Robotic Surgery Success
Dr Catarina Ang, a Melbourne surgeon at Genea, was featured in an article marking the 20th anniversary of robot-assisted surgery in Australia, discussing how the da Vinci surgical robot has revolutionised gynaecological procedures and patient outcomes.
Twenty years ago, the first robot-assisted urology surgery was performed at Melbourne's Epworth Hospital using the da Vinci surgical robot made by Intuitive Surgical. Since then, the technology has expanded significantly to include cardiac, thoracic, foregut colorectal, gynaecology, oncology, and more complex procedures like bariatric surgery.
Catarina highlights the transformative impact of robotic surgery on patient care. The technology has resulted in shorter hospital stays, minimal pain, and reduced complications for patients. "I think with da Vinci's technology, we're going to see many more applications in the years to come," she notes.
The key advantages of da Vinci robotic surgery, according to Catarina, centre on the superior vision and ergonomics the system provides surgeons. The enhanced binocular vision represents the most important advance in the technology, allowing surgeons to feel as if they are positioned close to the patient's anatomy. This immersive visual experience boosts surgical confidence and anatomical knowledge during procedures.
The benefits extend beyond just visual clarity. The robotic system aids surgeons in handling difficult cases whilst significantly reducing surgical fatigue—a crucial factor in maintaining precision during lengthy or complex procedures. This improved surgical experience translates directly into better patient outcomes, including shorter hospital stays, lower complication risks, and an overall enhanced recovery experience.
Colorectal surgeon Associate Professor Craig Lynch echoed these sentiments, noting that robotics had "come such a long way." "We can do operations easily, and we can do more complex procedures now that 20 years ago, we really didn't think possible," he said.
As robot-assisted surgery continues to evolve, surgeons like Catarina remain at the forefront of adopting innovative technologies that improve patient care and surgical precision in gynaecological and fertility-related procedures.
