9 April 2024: Genea’s new East Melbourne fertility clinic puts intimacy and warmth back into making a family | Australian Design Review
Genea's newest fertility clinic, located on Victoria Parade in East Melbourne, represents a deliberate shift in how fertility care is delivered, one that places equal importance on clinical excellence and the emotional wellbeing of patients.
East Melbourne was a natural choice for the clinic's Victorian home. The leafy inner-city suburb sits close to world-class hospitals and medical facilities, and its calm, residential character aligns with the experience Genea set out to create for its patients.
Genea Melbourne Medical Director Alex Polyakov acknowledges that the fertility journey brings with it a wide spectrum of emotions including hope, anxiety, and at times, deep sadness. The new clinic was designed with all of this in mind, aiming to provide a space that feels secure and caring rather than cold and clinical.
To bring this vision to life, Genea partnered with Unispace, global leaders in workplace design and construction. The brief was clear: create something that felt less like a medical facility and more like a warm embrace. The result is a space defined by soft lighting, curved forms, lush greenery, and warm textures, a striking contrast to the sterile environments typically associated with fertility treatment.
Thoughtful design decisions extend beyond aesthetics. Two separate waiting areas maintain a sense of privacy and boutique intimacy, with seating arranged in small clusters to accommodate patients and their support person comfortably. Consulting and treatment rooms are positioned in low-traffic zones to minimise patient crossover, a subtle but meaningful detail for those already navigating a complex emotional experience.
Genea Melbourne Director and Fertility Specialist Dr Chandrika Parmar notes that patients themselves have spoken to the impact the clinic environment has had on their journey, a testament to just how much the physical space matters.
In listening closely to patients and embedding their needs into every aspect of the clinic's design, Genea has set a new benchmark for fertility care in Australia.
