Risks of ovulation induction
While the ovulation induction process is generally safe and effective, there are some risks and side effects to be aware of.
- Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS): Symptoms may include abdominal bloating, rapid weight gain, nausea, vomiting, and shortness of breath. Most cases are mild.
- Multiple pregnancies: Oral medications have approximately a 5-10% chance of giving twins, while injectable gonadotropins can have up to a 25% chance. Multiple pregnancies increase the risk of premature birth, low birth weight, gestational diabetes, and pre-eclampsia.
- Mood swings and emotional changes: Irritability, mood swings, anxiety, or depression may be experienced.
- Physical side effects: Enlarged ovaries may cause bloating or abdominal discomfort. Headaches, hot flushes, breast tenderness, and nausea have also been reported. However, these side effects tend to be mild and temporary.
To minimise these risks of ovulation induction, your fertility specialist will carefully monitor you with regular blood tests and ultrasounds. Most women complete their ovulation induction cycle safely.
Is ovulation induction right for me?
Ovulation induction may be perfect if you experience:
- irregular or absent ovulation
- lengthy, irregular, or infrequent menstrual cycles
- PCOS
Unfortunately, it is not ideal for every woman. That is why your fertility specialist will provide you with a personal treatment plan to achieve your best outcome.
