FAQs
Genetic counselling is a service that helps individuals and couples understand how genetics may affect their fertility journey. At Genea, our genetic counsellors explain test results, identify potential health risks, and provide guidance on reproductive options so you can make informed decisions.
You may be referred to a genetic counsellor if you have a family history of certain health conditions, if you've had previous pregnancies affected by genetic variations, or if you've received a "high-risk" carrier screening result.
Genea has partnered with Eugene for reproductive genetic carrier screening, and expert genetic counselling support is available throughout the testing process. If you're considering carrier screening before you have results, or if you or a family member have a diagnosis of a specific genetic condition, or if you're planning to use a sperm or egg donor, it's best to discuss your options with a Genea Genetic Counsellor before proceeding.
Counsellors help you understand your risks, explain your carrier screening results, and discuss options for testing and treatment, including Pre-Implantation Genetic Testing (PGT-M) if needed. To speak with a Genea Genetic Counsellor, please call 02 8484 6548.
During your session, the genetic counsellor will review your medical and family history, explain any genetic test results (such as carrier screening, PGT-A, or PGT-M), and answer your questions. They also help you explore your reproductive choices and can provide a level of emotional support, although there is further support available from the Genea Counselling Team.
Our team can walk you through a wide range of tests including:
- Genetic carrier screening
- Preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic disorders (PGT-M)
- Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A)
This ensures you fully understand the implications of your results.
Genetic counsellors can identify potential genetic risks before treatment begins, explain the benefits and limitations of testing, and help you choose the best pathway for building your family. This support can give you clarity and confidence as you move through IVF or other fertility treatments.
No. Even if you don’t have a known family history, many people choose genetic counselling to better understand their fertility health. It can be helpful if you’re planning a pregnancy, considering IVF, or simply want reassurance about potential risks.
You can book a session by calling our Genetic Counselling Team directly on 02 8484 6548.
Your fertility specialist may also refer you as part of your care at Genea.
