How interstate donor treatment works

When you choose a donor who's available in another state, your treatment takes place in that state. Your ongoing care will be managed by a Fertility Specialist who consults there, while much of your day-to-day care can still happen close to home.

At your local Genea clinic

You can complete your monitoring appointments, such as blood tests and scans, at your local Genea clinic, so there's no need to travel for the routine parts of your cycle.

In your donor's state

You'll need to travel interstate for any procedures, including insemination (intrauterine insemination, or IUI), IVF egg collection and embryo transfer. Your Care Coordinator will talk you through each stage, so you can plan your travel with confidence.

Why choose an interstate donor

Choosing a donor is a deeply personal decision, and the right donor for you may not always be in your home state. Donor availability varies across Australia. For example, NSW currently has a donor shortage, while SA, QLD and the ACT have greater availability, including donors with high-demand traits.

Looking interstate opens up a wider pool of donors, giving you more choice on your path to parenthood. The trade-off is some travel for your treatment, and we're here to help you plan for it.

Support along the way

Choosing a donor is a big decision, and it’s normal to feel a mix of emotions along the way. Moving forward with an interstate donor can also bring up practical questions. For example, you’ll need a new referral from your GP to a fertility specialist in the state where your donor is available, and any embryos created will need to stay in that state. Our Donor Team, Care Coordinators and Nursing Team are here to guide you through the logistics, from the moment you choose your donor to the start of your treatment, and our counsellors are available whenever you’d like to talk things through, whether you’re building your family on your own or with a partner.
