Finding the right sperm donor can feel overwhelming, but our process is straightforward and designed with your wellbeing in mind. Here's what to expect:
You have as long as you need to choose your sperm donor, though most of our patients find a suitable donor within a couple of weeks. Though there is no waitlist, a donor matching your desired criteria may not be immediately available. In these cases, you may choose to wait as new donors are added to the database or revise your selection criteria. Throughout the whole process, you will have access to ongoing support from the Genea donor team, including your donor coordinator and counsellor.
Donor availability and selection timeline
We are proud to provide our patients with an exceedingly diverse choice of sperm donors through our Australian Genea sperm donor program as well as our international partners. This gives you access to donors from around the world, including Europe, the USA, and the varied backgrounds and cultures represented within these regions.
Constant donor availability with no waitlist
Due to this extensive combined database, we do not need waitlists for our patients seeking a sperm donor. There are hundreds of donors immediately available at any given time, and new donors are added to the database every couple of weeks, once they have passed the rigorous screening requirements of each provider.
The most popular donor traits preferred by our patients at Genea are Caucasian heritage, blond hair, and blue eyes. Despite the high volume of requests for these characteristics, we continue to be able to offer immediate access to these donors with these physical traits.
New donors become visible on our database as soon as they are accepted by the program. If you are waiting for a specific characteristic, your donor coordinator can notify you as soon as this becomes available.
The timeline from donor selection to treatment
Though most people take 1 - 2 weeks to make their donor selection, you can take as long as you need to find your match unless your fertility specialist recommends commencing treatment sooner rather than later for medical reasons. Your donor coordinator and counsellor are available to help you through any challenging decisions, such as if your selection criteria are particularly narrow and you are having trouble finding a donor.
It takes approximately 2 - 4 months from starting your search for a donor to confirming your selection. After purchasing the sperm, your treatment - whether with IVF, ICSI, or donor insemination, can commence as soon as 1 - 2 weeks later.

Complimentary professional counselling
As a valued patient at Genea Fertility, we provide sessions with our fertility counsellors, free of charge during your treatment with us. At least two counselling sessions for yourself and your partner (if in a couple) are required before proceeding with using donor sperm. If your donor is known to you, these sessions may require both of you to be present.
All our counsellors are mental health professionals and have specific experience in helping individuals and couples navigate the complexities of fertility treatments, including the emotional ups and downs that come with this journey.
A dedicated donor coordinator
Your donor coordinator is your main point of contact throughout your donor selection journey. In addition to providing you with overall guidance through the process, your coordinator can also offer advice around selecting a sperm donor, direct you to additional support resources, and help you organise your appointments at the Genea clinic.
