There are two different types of egg donation, each offering unique experiences, benefits, and considerations. Understanding these options helps you choose the approach that best aligns with your personal circumstances and motivations.
Known donors: Helping friends and family
Known donation involves providing eggs to people you know personally, such as friends, family members, or close acquaintances facing fertility challenges. You may also respond to an advertisement from someone you have no previous relationship with.
As a known donor, you can personally know any child conceived from birth, share the journey with the intended parent/s, and witness the direct impact of your generosity. Known donors also have more flexibility with eligibility requirements, such as age limits.
However, this personal relationship introduces complexity. Before proceeding, consider:
- How donating will impact your family dynamics and your relationship with the intended parent/s
- Whether you and the intended parent/s agree on your level of involvement in any child's life
Important: You cannot be genetically related to the person contributing sperm for the IVF treatment.
Clinic-recruited donors: Supporting people in need
Clinic-recruited donation involves participating in programs where you donate eggs to intended parent/s you don't know personally. Intended parent/s select donors through de-identified online profiles, and full anonymity is maintained throughout the process.
As a clinic-recruited donor, you can:
- Help build families even without knowing the intended parent/s personally
- Maintain privacy throughout the donation process
- Avoid the complexities of navigating personal relationships
- Gain valuable insights into your own health through comprehensive medical and genetic screening
Important: While you and the intended parent/s remain anonymous during donation, Australian law permits donor-conceived children to access your identity once they reach 16 to 18 years of age (depending on the state).
Unlike known donation, you won't have direct access to information about the child, though you may enquire about the number of children born, their ages, and genders.
How to become an egg donor
Step 1: Research and self-assessment
Before beginning, research egg donation thoroughly and assess your readiness for this commitment.
Consider these questions:
- What are your reasons you're wanting to become an egg donor?
- Are you emotionally prepared to donate your eggs to another family to conceive a child you may never meet?
- Do you have the availability and ability to commit to all the appointments required for the egg donation process?
- Are you willing and able to self-administer the medication injections (you will be coached by a fertility nurse on how to do this)
- Are you prepared to navigate the potential impact of your donation on your existing relationships, including with friends, family, your partner, and your own children?
- Do you have adequate support networks to help you throughout your donor journey?
You will have the opportunity to discuss all of these questions and more during your sessions with our professional counsellors, but it is beneficial for you to consider them ahead of time.
Step 2: Application and eligibility assessment
Contact the donor team to complete an application form.
The medical and psychological evaluation process
Medical and genetic screening (in-person at Genea) includes:
- Blood tests for infections and hormone levels
- Genetic testing for hereditary conditions and carrier status
- Pelvic ultrasound and physical examination
- Review of medications and immunisation history
Mandatory counselling includes two sessions (with your partner if applicable) to discuss motivations, emotional readiness, support systems, and donor implications. Our counselling team is available throughout the egg donor process to provide additional support and guidance as needed.
Step 3: Profile development and legal requirements
Creating a comprehensive donor profile provides intended parent/s with the information they need to make informed decisions about their treatment. Your profile will be completely de-identified, and your donor coordinator will help you put it together.
Step 4: Treatment and egg collection
Treatment Planning
Once matched with intended parent/s, your Genea fertility specialist will assess your natural cycle and create a personalised treatment plan for your egg collection cycle.
Ovarian stimulation and monitoring
Daily hormone injections over 10-14 days stimulate optimal egg development. Your fertility nurse will train you to self-administer these injections, which are tailored to your unique body. We'll monitor your progress through blood tests and ultrasounds every 2-3 days.
Egg retrieval procedure
This minor surgical procedure can be performed under conscious sedation or general anaesthetic, by an experienced fertility specialist. An ultrasound-guided probe is inserted via the cervix to collect eggs directly from your ovaries, which are then taken to our labs for analysis, fertilisation, and incubation.
Post-retrieval recovery and follow-up
Most donors return to normal activities within 1-2 days. Our fertility nurses will provide post-operative instructions and organise a follow-up appointment within a couple of weeks. Our counselling team and donor coordinator are available if you need support.
What to expect throughout your journey
Your contribution to the egg donor program is a profoundly life-changing experience, not only for your future intended parent/s but yourself, too.
