Guardian is a next-generation electronic witnessing platform developed by Genea Biomedx that uses QR technology to track and verify every patient sample throughout the IVF cycle. Used exclusively by Genea clinics in Australia, it creates a complete, real-time chain of custody from the moment samples enter the laboratory until transfer, enhancing both safety and efficiency.
What is electronic witnessing, and why does it matter?
In IVF, "witnessing" refers to the process of verifying that the correct samples belong to the correct patient at every critical step, including egg collection, fertilisation, embryo culture, transfer, and freezing.
Traditionally, witnessing was done entirely manually, with two staff members independently checking and confirming each sample before any procedure. Manual double-witnessing remains an important safeguard, but electronic witnessing systems add an automated layer of verification that works alongside manual checks, rather than replacing them.
Electronic witnessing has been a core part of how Genea operates for many years, and Guardian is the next generation of this technology, giving our team and our patients complete confidence at every step.
How Guardian works
Guardian uses QR codes to uniquely identify every patient sample container in the laboratory. At each critical step of the IVF process, the system scans and verifies that the sample matches the patient's record before the procedure can progress.
At every step of the embryo's movement, the Genea team verifies that the sample matches the patient record, both manually and electronically. Guardian confirms the verification in real time and logs it in a live audit trail, creating a complete chain of custody throughout the cycle.

This supports a level of consistency in safety oversight that is not possible with manual systems alone, and means the same standards of verification are applied at every Genea clinic, regardless of location.

Guardian does not replace the judgment or expertise of Genea's embryologists and scientists. At every step of the embryo's movement, the Genea team verifies that the sample matches the patient record, both manually and electronically. This dual approach reflects how safety systems work most effectively in high-stakes environments: electronic systems catch the errors that humans miss under cognitive load, and human oversight catches the edge cases that automated systems may not anticipate. Together, they are more reliable than either approach is alone.
If anything doesn't match, the system generates an alert before the next step can proceed. This means a human error at one stage can be caught by the system before it goes any further. It's not one safeguard, it's several working together.

Guardian is used across all Genea-branded clinics in Australia. Some of the fertility clinics that have joined the Genea group through acquisition may not yet have transitioned to Guardian, as the rollout across newly integrated practices takes time.
