Day 5/6 embryo transfers & single embryo transfer

Genea was an early adopter of both Day 5/6 blastocyst transfers and single embryo transfer in Australia, and each remains central to how we approach IVF today.

Transferring an embryo at Day 5/6, when it has developed into a more complex blastocyst structure, means we are working with embryos that have already demonstrated their capacity to keep developing. This improves the chances of successful implantation.

Transferring a single, carefully selected embryo reduces the risks associated with multiple pregnancies without compromising outcomes. Our technology gives us the confidence to transfer one embryo, because we have chosen the one most likely to succeed - a better result for both patient and baby.


Exclusive culture media

The solution your embryo grows in matters greatly. Unlike most clinics, Genea has been developing and using our own proprietary culture media for more than two decades, and it is specifically designed to support eggs, sperm and embryos at every stage of development.

 

Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT)

Genea was an early adopter of PGT in Australia and pioneered blastocyst (trophectoderm) biopsy, and our expertise and technique remain among the best in the world. PGT is a technique used alongside IVF to screen embryos for chromosomal abnormalities or inherited genetic conditions before transfer, helping to maximise the chance of a healthy pregnancy and reduce the risk of miscarriage.

We offer three types of testing: PGT-M tests for specific single gene disorders like cystic fibrosis or Huntington's disease, PGT-SR is used when a parent carries a chromosomal rearrangement that could affect a pregnancy, and PGT-A screens embryos for the correct number of chromosomes and may be suitable for patients who have experienced a chromosomal abnormality in a previous pregnancy, are over 35 years old, or have a history of recurrent miscarriages or repeated embryo transfers without pregnancy. 

Genea has experience testing for over 350 genetic conditions, and we are one of the few centres in Australia with both IVF and genetics facilities onsite. Many clinics around the world have since modelled their approach to embryo biopsy on ours.


Geri - the world's first humidified time-lapse incubator, available exclusively at Genea in Australia

Geri® is a purpose-built time-lapse incubator developed by Genea and exclusively used by our clinics in Australia. Each patient has their own individual incubation pod, embryos are left completely undisturbed for five days, and a dedicated camera continuously monitors development. This technology gives our embryologists the clearest possible picture when selecting the embryo most likely to result in a healthy pregnancy.

The outcome: a 12.2% increase in live births compared with traditional incubation systems.*

Grow™ - watch your embryos develop 

Grow™ is a world-first app, exclusive to Genea, that lets patients watch their embryos developing in the laboratory from their own device. Using the time-lapse cameras inside our Geri incubators, images and videos of patients' embryos are captured continuously and shared through the app. This means there is no disruption to the embryos and no need to wait for updates from the clinic.


Guardian - state-of-the-art electronic witnessing in our laboratories

Genea has upgraded to Guardian, a more advanced electronic witnessing platform that uses QR technology to track and verify every sample at every step of a patient’s cycle, enhancing both safety and efficiency. Used exclusively by Genea clinics in Australia, Guardian’s secure remote-access capabilities enable clinics to oversee laboratory operations across multiple sites, supporting consistency in care delivery.

At every step of embryo movement, the Genea team verifies that the sample matches the patient record both manually and electronically. Guardian confirms the verification in real time and logs it in a live audit trail, creating a complete chain of custody throughout the cycle.

Electronic witnessing has been a core part of how Genea operates for years, and Guardian is the next generation of this technology, giving our team and our patients complete confidence at every step. 


Cercle AI - Australia's first AI-powered patient insight tool

In partnership with Cercle AI, Genea is the first fertility provider in Australia to introduce an AI-powered patient insight tool built on real-world data. The tool generates personalised insights across multiple cycles, including egg retrieval expectations and treatment pathway considerations, to help patients make more informed decisions with their specialist, rather than relying on population averages.


World-leading NK cell research and testing

Genea is leading what is proposed to be the largest prognostic study of its kind in the world, investigating the role NK cells play in IVF outcomes. Led by A/Prof Gavin Sacks, this active research trial could open new pathways for patients experiencing recurrent miscarriage, repeated implantation failure during IVF and unexplained infertility.


Research into NMN and embryo development

Genea is participating in a world-class research collaboration with scientists at UNSW investigating whether a naturally occurring compound called NMN can support embryo development during IVF. It is one of several active research projects at the forefront of reproductive science.
